Rio Beauty - Marble Nail Art Polish: London Collection - Review

If there is one nail art technique I struggle with it's water marbling.
Freehand? No problem. Stamping? Tricky at first but got the hang of it after a few tries. Foils? Love it. But water marble vexes me. I have tried many times following various tutorials and with all different types of polish but have not for the life of me been able to get it to go right!
So I gave up, until now.

I know they are not a patch on some of the phenomenal water marble nail art designs I've seen elsewhere but I did it! A whole water marble mani!
And it was all thanks to the little box of magic after the jump.

Taa Daa!

When Rio Beauty contacted me and asked if I would like to try one of their new nail art products I pottered over to the website to see what they had to offer. The Marble Nail Art kit and a couple of other products caught my eye, but I decided I really wanted to give water marbling another try.

When it arrived I eagerly opened it up to have a look at what was included.
In the kit you get-

5 Marble Nail Art Polishes (Red, Black, Green, White and Orange)
5 Practise Nails
5 Orange Sticks
A Collapsible Marbling Pot (So cool)
Design Pen (Double ended dotting tool)
Masking tape
Mini Acetone Solution
2 in 1 Base Coat and Top Coat
Design Chart
Instruction Leaflet
Step-By-Step DVD

After having a good rummage I popped the DVD on. Whilst watching it I started to get a bit worried, there was no new information, no secret that I hadn't been let in on, it was everything I had already tried. I was pretty sure I was going to need more practice nails!

I followed the instructions to the letter keeping the leaflet nearby and had a go with the practice nails.

The first thing I notice was how easily the polish spread on the water. This was something that quite often went wrong for me before, the polish wouldn't spread properly so I ended up with a big gloopy mess on my nails. As you can see from the photo I was still having some problems with creating a pattern (Still not great at it now, I think that comes more with practice) and air bubbles, but I felt ready to have a go on my own nails. For my first attempt I picked Black, Orange and White for a Halloween feel.

These photos show the very first time a water marble has gone well enough for me that I've managed to complete a whole look! I was sooo pleased, I took photos on my phone and sent them to my Mum and best friend who were very impressed.

The design card that comes in the water marbling nail art kit show various different patterns and colour combinations you can try, the Halloween ones were done using the flower pattern that is the default water marble pattern you see all over blog-land, and the nails at the beginning of the post using Red, White and Orange were done using a swirl pattern to give it a kind of raspberry ripple effect.

I was a bit skeptical about how exactly the polishes were any different to normal nail polish. We know that it is possible to create stunning water marble designs using normal nail polish so it did make me wonder are these polishes actually any different or are they just plain nail polish with a fancy name?
The leaflet says that these polishes have a higher pigmentation and thinner consistency, which I can't say I really noticed but I have nothing else to put down my first ever water marble success to other than the polish.

This kit has well and truly given me the marble nail bug. It is so easy to use, it would be perfect for someone just getting into nail polish or if you are like me and just cannot master it!
Put it on your Christmas list.

You can buy this kit at Rio Beauty website for £24.99.

Is it something you would use? Or are you some sort of nail polish whisperer or water marbling natural?

  10. these are amazing! I was wondering if these were water marbled or those stickers you make yourself (you know, you paint on a ziplock bag and then stick it your nails once dried). I would love to test a kit out like that - it looks like it has all the necessary pieces for a great mani :)

    1. It's a great kit I really enjoy it and can see myself getting a lot of use out of it! Only thing it's missing is a blue but I'm thinking maybe they will release more colours for it as this is called The London Collection, kinda suggests there may be more kits coming, I hope so anyway! I haven't tried the ziplock bag technique yet but it looks good! x

  13. I might just be tempted to try this with my nails before I buy this set. Of course you just need cold water from the tap right? And can you use your own nail polishes if you don't have this kit yet? x

    1. Yep just cold water from the tap, I know it's possible to do it using regular nail polish but I've never been able to do it. I think it's all down to the nail polish formula which is a case of trial and error I guess! Let me know if you find any particular nail polishes that work well for you, I really want to try out more colour combinations now I've got the water marble bug! x

  14. Wow! These are amazing! I too hate water marbling, it always seems like so much effort, for a potentially rubbish result  I am itnerested in this kit though, if this is the magic solution, then I am in, you've created some beautiful designs there.

  24. such a brilliant idea to bring this out, water marble is so annoying when you can't get it right! these colours look really good too :)

  25. I know what you mean about water marbleing. My biggest struggle is moving quickly before it dries!!! I can never make any cool designs other than the stripes because it dries too quick and sticks to my toothpick thus ruining the design. But yours turned out very nicely. The colors go perfect!
